Following on from my article about whether Ryan Reynolds or Nathan Fillion should be cast for Hal Jordan in the Justice League movie, I was posed a question
“Who do I think should portray the rest of the justice league?”
Choosing to accept this mission I very quickly came upon another question
“Who makes up the Justice League?”
Now having an excuse to geek out in my free time, I spent an entire weekend re-watching the classic Justice League and Justice League Unlimited Cartoons and Smallville, re-reading my collection of comics and asking my fellow fans. Pretty much anything that ever had the words Justice League in them was used. When I eventually emerged from my dark, secluded bubble, I had come up with my list of characters that are generally accepted as members of the Justice league.
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Martian Man Hunter, The Flash, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Aquaman, Black Canary, The Atom, Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner and John Stewart.
The next challenge came to who would play each character. So back into my hole I went, scouring the internet, watching endless TV shows and Movies to try and find my cast, refusing to eat, drink, sleep or work until this had been completed. Superman is as good as cast with Henry Cavill powering along in the role and the Batman speculation is an article in itself (will Joseph Gordon Levitt fill out the cowl or is there any possibility Christian Bale could return?). Green Arrow’s got his own TV show with Black Canary in so with those mainstays eliminated from my wish list I set about assembling the best of the rest.
Various criteria had to be filled for someone to be eligible for the honour to portray the legends that are the JLA. Some of these were:
- Would they be suitable eye candy in skin tight spandex?
- Do they have any prior Nerd credentials?
- Do they look remotely like their character and do they have the ability to portray the various characteristics of them?
- And finally How likely are they to want to kill me if I don’t put them on my list?
After vetting many actors and actresses (and actually verbalising apologies and explanations to my computer screen as I deleted their picture) I came up with my Justice League.
So ladies and gentlemen, I present to you who I believe should be our Justice League (I don’t care if you disagree…I think they’re awesome!!!):
Now certain parties did want me to consider the lovely Gina Carano for this role, and I did. However another actress did catch my eye and may seem like a strange choice but her performance as Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers, though a small role, did convince me she could portray a strong, confident female role. So my choice to wield the Lasso of Truth goes to Cobie Smulders.
Though most of us will know her as Robin Scherbatsky from How I Met Your Mother, she does in fact have some half decent nerd cred to go with it. Her first recurring role was in 13 episodes of Veritas: The Quest, as well as appearances in Smallville and Andromeda. Her part as Agent Hill has been renewed and not recast for Iron Man 3 so she must have done something right.
Cobie, pack your bags, you’re moving to Themyscira.
MARTIAN MANHUNETER / J’ONN J’ONZZ
One thing in particular that I was looking at with J’onn J’onzz was his voice. I rather liked Carl Lumbly’s vocalisation of the Martian Man Hunter and so was looking for someone along the same lines, well spoken, educated and sounds like they actually know what they are talking about when referring to alien races and technology we have never heard of before.
I had considered Kelsey Grammar for a split second but while watching The Matrix I realised that for me it could only be Lawrence Fishburne. His portrayal of Morpheus shows his capability of playing the cool headed intelligent guy with an understanding of the situation at hand. Plus his character as Dr Raymond Langston in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation shows he can use all the complicated jargon that goes with sciency stuff that we don’t get and pretend he knows exactly what it means.
Larry, swot up on your Martian languages, you’re going to need them.
